This degree is designed to provide individuals with the basic business knowledge, economic awareness and skills needed to succeed in business as a manager and/or owner. The degree is intended to prepare people to plan, organize and manage human, financial and material resources to achieve the objectives of a business in the U.S. economy. Emphasis is on theories and fundamental activities in business operations.

Students interested primarily in transfer as a business major to a four-year college or university should consider the Associate of Arts with a Transfer Studies major and consult the business transfer information. Call the Information Sciences Department, 707.476.4208

Education in the field of general business is a solid foundation for almost any career goal you set for yourself. Whether you intend to work for a major corporation or start your own small business, the skills and knowledge you gain from general business education will serve you in good stead and increase your earning potential when you graduate.

Consider the following statistics:

  • Business/Management related degrees make up about 39 percent of all associate degrees nation- wide.
  • Nationally, 27.8 percent of Associate and vocational degree holders are in executive and professional occupations with an even higher percentage likely to be in adminis- trative support and other business-related occupations.
  • Persons in the areas of business, engineering, and law earned more than those in the academic fields of liberal arts and the social sciences.

Entrepreneurs and the small businesses that they create are a vital part of our economy, and a proper business education is essential to the success and survival of any small business.

Small businesses:

  • provide virtually all of the net new jobs
  • represent 99.7% of all employers
  • employ 53% of the private work force
  • provide 47% of receipts (sales)
  • provide 55% of innovations
  • obtain 35% of federal contract dollars
  • provide 28% of all high technology jobs
  • provide 51% of private sector output

Yet, the number of small business failures is much greater than the number of successes. Proper education and training can provide you with the edge to make your small business succeed.
